Why is chain lubrication important?
With Wild Horse Gravel this month, we wanted to highlight the importance of lubricating your chain. Last year during the event it was the #1 roadside service we provided. If you are participating in Wild Horse or Crooked Gravel this year, stop by our tent to lubricate your chain before, during, and after the ride.
Why is chain lubrication important?
The bike chain is the essential part of your bicycle. It’s responsible for transferring power from the pedals to the wheels. But as you ride, dirt, dust, and grime build up on the chain. This can cause friction and wear, which can lead to damage and ultimately reduce the lifespan of your chain. Lubricating your bike chain reduces friction, wear and it helps to keep your chain running smoothly and can significantly extend its lifespan. This means that you'll get better performance from your bike and save money in the long run by avoiding costly repairs or replacement parts.
When to lubricate your bike chain?
The frequency of lubricating your bike chain depends on several factors, such as the weather, the terrain you ride on, and the type of lubricant you use. In general, it’s recommended to lubricate your chain every 100 miles, or whenever you notice that your chain is dry or making a lot of noise. Colorado is dry and dusty and if you are riding gravel or singletrack it wouldn't hurt to lightly wipe your chain after every ride and just before your next ride apply a light amount of lubricant. Then wipe away any access lube from the outside of your chain
How to lubricate your bike chain?
The key is to lubricate each pin and roller inside the chain links. You do NOT want lubricant on the outside of your chain or on your chainrings. Here are the steps to follow:
Clean your chain - Before applying new lubricant, wipe your chain to remove any dirt or grime that may have accumulated. You can use a brush or a cloth to wipe it clean.
Apply lubricant - Apply a small amount of lubricant to each link of your chain, making sure to cover the entire length of the chain. Be careful not to apply too much as excess lubricant can attract more dirt.
Wipe off excess - After applying the lubricant, wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. This will help to prevent dirt and debris from sticking to the chain.
Lubricating your bike chain is a quick and easy process that can make a significant difference in your cycling experience. By reducing friction and wear, you'll enjoy smoother, quieter rides and extend the lifespan of your bike chain. So, make sure to include chain lubrication in your regular bike maintenance routine to get the most out of your bike.
